hi all,
thought i would start a thread reccomending and discussing the best black and death metal around. i personally want to expand my collection but have no-one to chat death with.

anyway, my fav death/black bands are (with albums)

Nile, In thier darkened shrines, amongst the catacombs of nephren-kah, in the beginning.

Sepultura, beneath the remains, arise

Dimmu borgir, Death cult armageddon

at the gates, pretty much everything,

in flames, again, pretty much everything

satyricon, volcano

opeth, definately everything.

rapture, the silent stage

cannibal corpse, eaten back to life, gore obsessed

isis (ok not death or black, technically doom, but ESSENTIAL) oceanic, celestial.

arcturus, Aspera hiems symfonia.

im sure there is more out there, lets have your favorite albums people!

Surprised to see Rapture in there. AFAIK the band is rather unknown, especially all the other names you have listed are kind of "well known (dark) metal acts". There really is plenty of more worthy dark metal out there, and it has been discussed in depth at the Darkest Desires-threads.

I always thought of Sepultura as thrash, not so much black/death.

No Dark Tranquillity, eh?

yeah dark tranqullity are ok, not really original though.
i saw the darkest desires thread after i made this one, kinda kicked myself...
i allways saw sepulturas older stuff as early death, perticularely arise...

ah man, need sleep.

Arsis - for everybody that thinks At the Gates is too slow, Dark Tranquility is too straightforward, and late-period In Flames just sucks.

..in short, they're At the Gates on massive speed with touches of tech thrown in throughout.

Definitely have to agree with At the Gates, I'm listening to Slaughter of the Soul at the moment, great stuff. Isis, I'm a big big fan of Oceanic, The Red Sea, and SNGL-05, and if you're going to throw them in then I'll have to say Neurosis' albums as well. In Flames started strong but I think they started going downhill after Whoracle.

yeah, a death and black metal thread!

the long-running Darkest Desires thread is great and all, but the focus there seems to be more on the melodic/gothic/semi-'romantic' (for want of a better term) bands, even though they do cover their share of heavy bands. so i'm all for a thread on dirty, grimy, brutal death/black metal hahaha.

some personal faves:

Repulsion
Angelcorpse
old Destruction/Sodom/Kreator
Cryptopsy
Morbid Angel
Slayer ("Seasons" and before)
Sepultura ('Arise' and before)
Incantation
Carcass
Autopsy

... anybody else out there who never 'got' the Gothenburg melodic death sound? It never really worked for me, even At the Gates (think i dig Tomas' crust bands more, to be honest); give me "Left Hand Path" anyday hahaha.

Why hasn't
Obituary,
Necrophagist, and
Children of Bodom
been mentioned yet???
Some of the best death metal out there, I mean Obituary is one of the originals.

Oh and same for Venom, they did technically make the first black metal song
