I have been looking to get a new soundcard for a while, but I want something that copes with gaming performance as well. I only use stereo speakers so it is really just trying to keep the FPS up.

On the other hand, I do listen quite seriously. Currently using a HEADFIVE with ATH W5000s out of a Philips Ultimate Edge. Not ideal I know, but the Philips card actually sounds pretty good with ASIO. I am thinking of getting a DAC though so need something capable of bit-perfect digital out.

I want to avoid Creative cards because of driver bloat. There does not seem to be many other options though - possibly EMU, but even then... I would just get a Juli@ or Onkyo 200PCI but it's the gaming performance that puts me off a bit.

I was wondering if dual core CPUs negate the processing overhead of soundcards, since most games only use one core so there is a "spare" core to process sound, but I have a feeling not. I cannot find any benchmarks of such a system.

Any advice would be much appreciated....
