What a wonderful piece of work.

OK - so what I don't understand is why Billy composed it, but Mr. Woo peformed it on the album?

Anyone know the history of this?

Billy is not capable of playing them the way that he wanted them to be played. That is why.

You don't have to be capable of playing something to be able to compose it. Think about all the composers who wrote music for instruments they didn't play. In this case, although Billy is a talented pianist, he may have written music that was outside his own capabilities as a player. It's better to have someone else play your music if they will do a better job.

I would think it would be intuitive. Many symophony composers one play a few instruments, but write music for the entire ensemble, including those instruments they don't know, simply because they know what it should sound like. In this case, Mr. Joel had an idea in his mind, penned it, and knew he was incapable of playing it the way it was meant to be played, if I understand correctly. It makes perfect sense.
