Both Headroom and Stereophile frequency response graphs show the DT860 as having a bit less bass than the HD595 but JensL said in his review thread that the DT860 has "more and deeper bass."

When run through the 120 ohm jack of a Corda Prehead ,the DT860 has some of the best headphone bass there is but I would not recommend it for computer use.Stick with a Corda amp with a 120 ohm jack or match it up with a good tube amp.120 ohm adapters are available from Meier-Audio if you want to use the DT860 with the computer or you might try the DT440 which works fine through the more common 0 ohm jack.

The truth is that Beyerdynamic did such a great job in copying the HD600 with their model DT880 that most people actually think that Beyerdynamic headphones sound this way.

I have no idea where you get this impression from. The DT880 sticks to the Beyer house sound, and isn't warm enough tonally to be a Sennheiser.

I am considering the DT860 because I no longer have a headphone amp (and probably won't for a while). I see the 120 ohm adaptor is currently not listed on Meier Audio and it was 1/8" anyway (I need 1/4"). My main out is around 25ohms output impedence so hopefully I can handle the sizzle! DT440 freq. response looks good but I want something more detailed (I'd also consider the Sony SA-3000 if it was available in the US).

As break-in has progress, the bass that's starting to come out of my (50 ohm) HD595 is amazing to my ears. More monitor-like than HD650. More monitor-like than some Acoustic Energy AE1 MKIII + Micromega amp I used to have (no child's play

). Incredibly clear, and very deep. With DT860 it would be a tough match.

Edit: the overall detail throughout is no less "WOW" in the least.

Edit/2: sorry, off-topic.

I own both the DT860 & the DT880.The DT880 may say Beyerdynamic on the outside but its heart is a Sennheiser on the inside. There is nothing wrong with this ,it just gives the HD580,HD600,& HD650 fans a 4th choice.

*Looks at his DT770 on the night-stand*... Nope one sided cord (left), and not removeable.

I thought you sold your 595 earlier ? Please make a comparison if you decide on 860 later on.

Hmm....the DT880 sounds more like the Sennheiser house-sound?
I can't say I agree.

Yes, the DT880 is quite different from a DT990, and more in the direction of the HD650, but I still think Beyer has kept its own sound-character.

But then again...who cares?

Both the HD650 and DT880 sounds damned good.
Some prefer the Senn, some prefer the Beyer.

In regards to the bass of the DT880, I can't say it's lacking in any way.
It's not as in your face as the HD650 or DT770, but it's easier to pick out details in the lower frequencies with the DT880. The bass doesn't interfer with the soundstage as it might do with other phones.

Compared to the DT860, the DT880s bass goes at least as deep, but it doesn't have the midbass hump.

The DT880s bass takes a little getting used to, but I think it is very rewarding.
Also, in my opinion, the Beyerdynamic DT880 is one of the best bargains on the market, if you got a good amp for it.

In my system, I still prefer the DT880 over the HD650 for most music.
But the HD650 is still one of the best.
I just prefer the Beyer house-sound. :)

Thanks for all the info guys. you rock.

A couple of more questions.

How do the 880's and 860's compare to the 990's and also to the senn 600's and grado 325's.

I really love the grado sound, it is so in your face but then again I love the Senn sound as well very laid back and clean. I figure what is another $200 to get the beyer sound. thanks again guys

I'm not too much of a Beyer geek, am I?

And I still need to hear the DT990 and DT150, arrrrrrgh!

Great rundown on the BD line! I've heard 'em all, and own the DT880s, from which most of my (non-ear-melting rock) sounds great with the GL+PSU... I slightly prefer the bass, actually, from the DT880/GL combo than the HD650/GL combo... that changes to the HD650's favor, though, when I switch to a balanced rig with the Senns...
