This is so true.

Until a few days ago, I had the DT990, the SR225 and the HD600. I have sold the DT990 and the SR225... I listen to a lot of classical music and I really do like the HD600 for that kind of music. I have never heard the HD650, but to my ears the HD600 are much better than the DT990.

I have a pair of Stax SRS-4040 coming but that's another story

650's, especially since you already love the Senn sound.

The 990's will give you a sharp sizzling treble section and a recessed midrange. The 650's have a smooth midrange without too much bass or treble (though I still like less bass than the 650's). The Beyers will require your ears naturally hear the bass and treble, or require lots of focus to home in on the midranges.

Funny I'm hearing almost the exact opposite. Using 990s, 250 ohm, with velour pads--thanx to Bushguy for them--with either Portaphile or SM IV LE and LOVE the Beyers with classical, esp. big symphonies and choral settings. Fantastic soundstage and overall presence to the music. Don't know, but had leather, pleather and finally these velour pads and the velour made everything sound so much better.

I owned both for a while and at first I liked the 990 a lot, probably because of the contrast it made to the 650, but I soon noticed that quite often the 990 just sounded funky and strange and lacked a lot of the fullness, richness and organic touch of the 650s. That, combined with the peaky treble made the 990 sound a little boring actually and made all music sound the same in a way.

For me, the HD650 has that ever elusive "musicality" edge over the DT990. The Beyers are a fun sound, but the highs are harsh, the midrange recessed, and the bass a little too prominent. Listening to them can get fatiguing for me, whereas the Senns are silky smooth.

Note I also prefer the K701 and DT880 over the DT990. But there are plenty of DT990 fans out there, and they are reputed to have fantastic synergy with Meier amps.

Well, you guys pretty much convinced me that the HD-650 are the right choice for me. What I admire the most about them (the HD-580s I had) is their silky, texture rich quality, an overall comfortable sound with most genres.

Grado highs (SR-225) were too much for me. I had inner ear pains and all.

Nasal highs, recessed mids and bloated bass made me give up on the DT-770s and their tiring unnatural presentation.

I think going with the DT-990s instead of the HD-650s will be just a waste of time. Hopefully I'll like the 650s as much as I liked my 580s.

Now, I was going to get a Corda Opera for the 990s... is that still a good choice for the 650s?

Thanks again

If you are a person that likes their sound realistic, forget the 990s. I think their sound is synthetic. I even prefer senns 555s to them even though they are less refined grainwise. I would definitely go for the hd650s.

I personally havent heard the 650s but all the senns ive heard in the upper ranges(580/600/595) I prefer to the beyer.

I would easily go with the HD650. I've auditioned the 990's and the bass is extremely over the top, the highs are too harsh, and all this results in the mids being a bit recessed.
If you had asked HD650 or DT880 however, then the answer would've been different...

Now if you will have the Opera, downstream I highly recomend the DT-990s. The two are a synergistic match made in the heavens!!!!!

The Corda is slightly rolled off ever so slightly in its high freq. extention and is a rounder warmer amp than neutral as well as is its intergrated source which also controls the lower frequencys with impact and articulation with the 990s IMO

Good luck~
