IMHO the 580 is warmer and more bassy. The 880 is a much more accurate phone and has some treble boost going on that the 580 doesn't have.

Detail resolution is superior on the 880. The 580 is mushy sounding and bloated by comparison. Soundstage is better on the 880, the 580 tends to vacate center stage IMHO.

Listen to them however and see which you prefer. Technically the 880 is a superior phone in terms of spectral accuracy, detail resolution and soundstage. Yet I chose the 580 for its warmth and groovy-nature. I spent a lot of time demoing them both at one of the san jose meets I was like this with the 580

with the 880.

Which amp will you be using with these cans? Both of these phones character is highly dependent on what is driving them. Both need amplification to excel
