Beyerdynamic dt880-600 ohms-what amp will drive these
Jun 13, 2020 at 8:10 AM Post #2 of 11
Welcome to Headfi sunsetsunrise. The DT 880 is quite hard to drive but not as bad as some planar magnetic headphones. With a sensitivity of 98db/mW they are reasonably efficient. I run mine with a battery powered Centrance HiFi M8 and a Mayflower Objective O2+ODAC. Centrance no longer make the M8 but you can still by the O2 although many would dislike it preferring something warmer for the DT 880. With an iPad or iPod this headphone will not sound its best and will often lack volume especially with material recorded at a low signal level. So an amplifier is preferable for this headphone. All it needs is about 100mW at 600 ohms output. Just have a look at the amplifier specifications and avoid cheap, small, battery powered versions.

What amp will drive the 600 ohm dt880s?
Schiit Magni or JDS Atom headphone amplifier.
What is your budget for the headphone amplifier?
What are you using for a DAC?
What sources will this stuff be connected to?

I know this is probably OVERKILL but you can always buy the Emotiva BasX A100 and remove the internal jumpers to unleash with 50 watts out (page 11 MOD) like Z Reviews did with his 880 Premium

I think I must listen louder than most people here. I've run the Beyers with a LD MKIII, JDS Atom and Magni, and while they all managed to drive the 880s relatively loudly, there was absolutely zero headroom. The LD and Atom are okay (only in terms of driving, not referring to sound quality which was great), but I had them running high gain and maxed out.

I've got a BasX on order (shipping end of the month, apparently), I'll report back once I've tried it out.

Take a look at some proper amp like the Lake people G103s/G109s or p.

These amp will spit a lot more voltage than the most hp-amps in their price range.
It should be a safe bet if you want to get the best out of your high imp headphone.

Specs of the little G103s, which has an affordable price tag.

Max. output level:
> 17.8 Veff in 600 ohms = 530 mW
> 16.0 Veff in 300 ohms = 850 mW
> 13.7 Veff in 200 ohms = 940 mW
> 7.5 Veff in 50 ohms = 1130 mW
> 3.7 Veff in 16 ohms = 890 mW

Even the Audio GD NFB 10.33 i've had a while ago was a more than great pairing with my T1.2, which is in the same ball park impedance wise.

Hope you'll find the right amp for your DT, whatever you'll pick in the future.

All the best
Chris

Try a WooAudio WA2 or Violectric V281

I would also suggest something from Audio-gd.

I’ve been using an SA-31SE for many years now...

This will drive ‘em!

Just waiting for it to arrive from Poland!

Theoretically those 6S41S tubes will deliver both voltage (for the Beyers) and current (for planars). Yes! An OTL which can handle planars...
