Amping sounds like the way to go here.... Call me crazy, but what do you think about modding this?

Would it even be worth it?

If you plan to get the A900 some time just get it - it's cheaper in the long run to buy the one you want than to buy the cheaper one AND then the expensive. If you think you'll be happy with the 500 then cool

And they have a good resale value here too.

Best do a search on the boostaroo, someone's bound to have tried it. I have a MisterX pimeta for sale too, once I get around to working how much it's worth and putting the ad up.

Ran this search, but nothing really to speak of. I may dabble with it a bit, but even the initial $30 investment isn't even worth it, most likely.

Sorry I never had any Beyer yet but like to know what kind of 440 is this ?

Seems like Beyer is more keen to come up with new phones design than series name (and cables !).

Anyways, Commando, tell me, just HOW good do these really sound? Are we talking far and away the best closed cans ever? Or at least the best closed cans under $2000? Or would you say it's in the top 5 best closed cans under $2000, that don't need massive amplification?

Maybe one of the best closed can under $300, is more like it.

That's their old 600-ohm version from the 80's.

You know, I've been thinking alot over the past day in regards to the Audio-Technica ATH-A900, and I'm sure it sounds great.

The problem is, the rest of Audio-Technica's product line is pure *****.

I just don't see how they could retain me as a customer overall.

So, for the time being, thoughts have returned to Beyerdynamic. Very wide product depth, and good marketing.

My thouhgts will continue over the coming days...

You don't know that as a fact, and in fact, you're wrong. A500 is a fine headphone at its price, and AD7 and AD700 also has its benefits. The woody series are known as being good, and imited editions like the A100Ti and A1000 has also gained fans here, though not widespread.
