Hi, newb here.

I've enjoyed reading several posts regarding Beyerdynamic headphones, especially recent posts regarding the DT440.

They seem like the ideal phone, with one exception. They are of the open design.

What pair of Beyerdynamic phones would you recommend that are of a closed design, yet will not lose any of the sonic quality (i.e. detail, bass, and upper and lower ends) of the DT440?

The 250-250 is the one to choose if you want a lighter weight headphone that is run off the more common 0 ohm headphone jack and the DT660 is the one to choose if you are willing to put up with more weight and deal with the less common 120 ohm jack or adapter.

Good idea. Seconded. I'm not too much a fan of the 80-Ohm-version, though...

Closed beyers - try the 250-250 or 250-80.

Damn, I should try and get comission the number of times I recommend these things!

Thanks for the great info Commando, I'm going to definitely check out the 250 - 250's, but will also temporarily glance at the A500s ad A900s.

Right now, I'm running a pair of Grado SR-80s, with the Senn mod, which is nice for home use, but let me tell you, these phones redefine the term "open." They aren't practical in most inhabited listening situations.

Hopefully, the 250-250ohmers will be driveable off of a laptop without an amp. I could always cmoy it for better sound, but then I'm dealing with literally four different volume controls.

Someone needs to fix this problem.

When Beyerdynamic updated the DT531 to the 32 ohm DT440 they forgot to update the DT250-250 to a 32 ohm version also. This is the headphone missing out of the DT440,DT660,and DT860 family.

So, what exactly are you saying here? The Beyer 250 -250 should actually be a Beyer 250 - 32???? I am confused.

Well, the A900s are tempting, especially on an old schooler's recommendation, not to mention, they're not out-of-control expensive. I don't really care for the 4-inches-off-the-top-of-your-head-dual-tension-cylinders though. I could be brought around, however.

Anyways, Commando, tell me, just HOW good do these really sound? Are we talking far and away the best closed cans ever? Or at least the best closed cans under $2000? Or would you say it's in the top 5 best closed cans under $2000, that don't need massive amplification?

Just looking to get a sense of overall quality.

Heh heh, old school, i've been here 7 months

My review says it all really - they're the best closed cans i've tried, and i've tried quite a few - though obvsiouly far from all of them. The only possible ways you might get a better sealed can are limited edition AT woodies or the A1000 - which I hear isn't that much better. There's definitely not the range of closed cans as there are open, unfortunately.

They sound fine out of the AV710 line out but with an amp they sound much better. Running them out of a standard headphone is fine, but with an amp you get better sound overall. So you don't need an amp but it helps.

Awesome information! Thank you!!!!!!!

I'll be picking up a pair soon, however, I may have to start out with the 500s... The single c-note price tag is just too tempting....

Amping sounds like the way to go here.... Call me crazy, but what do you think about modding this, you know add a transistor or two, maybe a lith-ion watch battery, throw in something from here?

Would it even be worth it?
