Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO // DT 1990 PRO MK II -- Impressions Thread

I see you have the same Meier dac/amp setup as I do. I loved my DT 770 Pro, but sold it to a friend when I wanted to try the Fidelio X2 (ended up being too dark for me). I was tempted to get the 1770 Pro, but I felt it might be too similar to my Fostex X00. I was looking to upgrade to a flagship open headphone, but was having a tough time motivating myself to spend more than a grand. I write reviews and like to have a couple different headphones (along with my room speaker setup) to compare, but man, is an Ether Flow really worth the extra $1,200?

Beyond the other Beyer phones, what would be the closest comparison/competition for the 1990 Pro?

I can't really answer this since I do not know any other headphone that sound like the Beyerdynamic house-sound to me. But I think kman1211 already answered this. :-)

Nice! I see the Furutech FT-608mf :) I wait for my custom cable to be made with the same connector + ft-735.
Cant you test 1990 with leatherette pads from 1770 and compare them to 1990's balanced?

Jealous!

The more I see the DT-1990, though, the less I seem to like it's open earcup pattern. A little too "cheap industrial", although I suppose that's so it can withstand some rough and tumble studio life. Much prefer the classier T1 or T90 look (Or DT-990 Premium).

I tested the earpads of the DT990 and DT1770, I must say that the result is not good at all ! Earpads with the DT990 the sound is too bright for me, with those of the DT1770 is the reverse ... So in my DT1990 works well with earpads '' balanced '', I mean what I know ie my combo iFi Micro GDI + iTube + ican SE

I'm not surprised the DT 990 pads sound on it. The darkness of the DT 1770 pads didn't bother me(though other aspects did some), but some reason on my main system, the balanced pads have the most bass impact, when underpowered the DT 1770 pleather pads have the most.

Mine arrived this morning and I've had just a couple hours so far. Just now I was enjoying the bass sound on Opeth's "The Wilde Flowers" during the guitar solo, 2:35 - 3:25, and switched to my TH-X00 to compare. It's hard to A/B because the 1990 requires more juice from the amp, but the bass is definitely more pronounced on it, but also not as crisp, and the guitar tones are more subdued and less vibrant compared to my first impression on the 1990. So far it seems to be just what I was hoping for!

I'm curious how you find they compare to your Fidelio X2s.

I've always been a Beyer fan, and the new "Pro" (1770 and 1990) sound like they have mids that, while not exactly forward, are less "scooped" than the DT770 and DT990. I was surprised at how lush-sounding the mids on my 1770s were compared to my 990s. It's making me want to replace the 990s with the 1990s.

I just got the 1990 and I have to say I am impressed. I am running it through the Schiit mjolnir 2 with some nice tubes. With the analytical pads on its very balanced . Everything seems in place. No treble spike . The bass is a vast improvement over the T1 it goes a lot deeper. The sound stage is nice to. Not as wide as my T1. It really just sounds so balanced not to much of anything. Detail is also very good. They have really improved the treble a whole heap from there earlier cans. Voices also sound really natural e.g., nothing sounds pumped frequency wise. Whats exciting with burn in I believe they will only improve further.

My Fidelio X2s definitely have a deeper, rich low end, but that's not what I'm looking for this time. The 1990s are much less dark than the Fidelio. They maybe be the closest I've heard so far to neutral, which makes sense for a Pro set marketed to audio professionals.

Has anyone purchased them with the amp/chip bundle on Amazon? Mine were supposed to come with them but they were missing, and the vendor has not replied.

Now I'm curious about these compared to my T90's. The treble doesn't bother me at all, even when I push the volume a bit.

If someone is treble sensitive should they stay away from the DT1990pro. I returned my DT1770pro, it was amazing in all regards apart from sharp treble to my ears.

Also may I ask how the Sound stage compares to the HD650 which does have good sound stage.

How power hungry are these cans? I have a Teac UD301 which isn't a terribly powerful amp but it seems to drive my R70X's without any real issue and those are rated for 350 ohm. I know the ohm rating doesn't tell the whole story though.
