These are my most likely next headphones coming from DT 990's. The LCD-2, LCD-X, and HD800S are a little out of my price range at the moment.

DT1990 so much better than LCD-2

The DT1990’s are that good, I haven’t used my HD800’s in ages. These are my most likely next headphones coming from DT 990's. The LCD-2, LCD-X, and HD800S are a little out of my price range at the moment.

I know the DT1770s are closed back and the DT1990s are open back, but can anyone compare the sound? I have the DT1770s and I’m thinking of getting rid of them and getting the DT1990s. Thanks!

Open back will usually be more expansive and natural, but it depends on what kind of sound you are after.I know the DT1770s are closed back and the DT1990s are open back, but can anyone compare the sound? I have the DT1770s and I’m thinking of getting rid of them and getting the DT1990s. Thanks!
I just picked up the T5P 2nd gen's, which is probably a step up from the DT-1770's, but they are closed back Beyer's none the same. I already had the DT-1990's and my thoughts are the T5P's sound just as open, if not more so, than the DT-1990's. I'm not sure if the drivers are different on the T5P's, I think they are, but they are even more detailed and have even more clarity than the DT-1990's. The T5P's have more bass and more punch than the DT-1990's, which I thought had very, very good bass until I heard the T5P's. I'm literally flabbergasted at how much better the T5P's sound over the DT-1990's. I didn't think the gap would be that big but it is.I know the DT1770s are closed back and the DT1990s are open back, but can anyone compare the sound? But once you get the sound of the T5P's out of your head and just listen to the DT-1990 you realize how special they are especially for the price. The beat everything in their price range to my ears. I love my DT-1990's and if you want an semi-open and closed can Beyer the DT-1990's are totally worth it. Vocals sound so good and natural out of the DT-1990's. I normally listen to DT-1990's with my iDSD BL with 3D+ engaged for an even more expansive soundstage as well. That amp really pairs well with the DT-1990 and the two are really musically engaging.
Thank you for your impressions @Slim1970
I'm really surprised that you find the T5p to be a noticeable step up from the 1990. I didn't have opportunity to audition them, but I read quite a bit of reviews where people were saying that the 1990 are very, very close to the T1 or the HD 800 even and I can imagine T1 is even better than T5p.
Sadly both of these cans cost more than I am willing to spend on a headphone, so I am happy with my 1990s. Great cans btw. They make my p7w sound really thin

Thank you for the reply! This is really helpful. I was looking at the T5ps as well, but the price range was little high for me. I’m glad to hear about the iDSD BL because I just traded my Chord Mojo and was looking at that for a replacement.
I have the P7W’s as well and I think it’s just going from the tesla driver to a dynamic driver without giving your ears a break in between causes that effect. The Tesla drivers offer up so much clarity than your mind thinks there’s a loss of detail when switching quickly back to a dynamic driver. That’s why it’s hard for me to a/b certain headphones. Of course none of this is scientific it’s just my impression.Thank you for your impressions @Slim1970

Tesla is a dynamic driver just FYI. Its actually just a magnet in the drivers.I have the P7W’s as well and I think it’s just going from the tesla driver to a dynamic driver without giving your ears a break in between causes that effect. I have both and the iDSD BL is an excellent option for a replacement for the mojo. I think it pairs better with more headphones, has more power, has more features, and is just as detailed. But it’s not as portable but you can transport it around. The XBass+ and the 3D+ are excellent and let’s you add bass and soundstage to just about any headphone. I think you’ll enjoy especially with the DT-1990’s.Thank you for the reply! This is really helpful. I was looking at the T5ps as well, but the price range was little high for me.
