Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO - Beyer's open-back mastering headphone

Nope, no treble issues, here either. Perhaps, DT-1770 and DT-1990 are the most un-beyer-like when it comes to beyer house sound.

The more I read, the more I am wanting the new DT1990. My biggest issue with my DT770 and T70 was the treble; Too brittle and too harsh.

From DT 1990 headfonia review:
"The Hifiman HE-400i, which more or less is in the same price class, has bigger bass and bigger mids but the level of detail and precision isn’t the same. The DT1990PRO’s sound stage also is wider and deeper. The HE-400i is warmer sounding and while it is a very very good headphone (best of mid-fi) it doesn’t reach the level of technicality the DT1990PRO has. It is more fun and it’s easier to listen to but the HE-400i is far from pro studio Monitor, so that’s perfectly ok."

From having had beyerdynamic headphones for more than 10 years including DT-880 250 Ohm, DT-990 250 Ohm, DT-770 32 Ohm, T70, T70p, T1v1, T5pv1, T51p, T50p, DT-1350 and now DT-1770 Pro I find it completely opposite. To me the DT-1990 and DT-1770 is like beyerdynamic has finally found their statement of their real house-sound. To me the soul of 1770 and 1990 is exactly what beyerdynamic has always been for me. Clean, bright, fast, open (but not Grado-like openness). The new PRO headphones is the perfect balance between all the former models. Strikingly musical but without a tiring WOW-factor that gets irritating in the long run.

I agree. DT1770 is a superb closed back... They've refined the sound and really improved it. They are so well balanced and without the fatiguing treble of their older line up. I feel they are fantastic all rounders.

Comfort and build quality is also exceptional.

Kudos Bayer.

I disagree. DT-1770 and DT-1990 are what many beyer-treble-averse users hoped beyerdynamic would one day evolve into, which they finally did by going a little easy on treble finally and becoming more balanced. Fast and punchy at the same time too, in all 3 areas, thanks to Tesla 2.0. A big gift to especially those who hated the T70/p and T90 treble in particular and the treble in general in DT-990 and even a bit of it in 880 and 770 and almost all other beyers including T1 and T5p that made beyer house sound what it was. Perhaps DT-1770 and DT-1990 are a better realized Tesla version of what DT-880 (600 ohm) tried to achieve - the most balanced non-Tesla studio headphone ever. So much so that one wonders how farther can beyerdynamic go in balanced/neutral direction if it were to launch a DT-1880 that DT-1770 or DT-1990 already can't do. I am confident that beyerdynamic, with DT-1770 and DT-1990 won the hearts of many beyerdynamic users and doubters who hated beyerdynamic's treble-oriented house sound. Sure, they are ALSO as fun and musical, if not more than, T1.2 and T5p.2.

Also, just give them, any beyerdynamic headphone, new heroes or old buddies, a little tube love, Bottlehead Crack or DarkVoice, maybe, and they will be just as heavenly as they can ever get. All complaints will evaporate into thin air.

The new beyerdynamic seemingly signature balanced SQ statement, according to me, evolved in this chain chronologically: DT-100 -> DT-150 -> DT-880 (600ohm) -> DT-1770 -> DT-1990 and maybe --> DT-1880, the studio signature ToTL.

IMO its the T1 without the treble spike and a richer bottom end. it really does sound so balanced. not to much of this or that. I personally was after a neutral sound that was analytical. I tend not to enjoy v shaped cans.

I agree. DT-1770/1990 is T1 rehabilitated after correction. Or, DT-880 (not 990) growing up with even more balanced outlook and quicker reflexes due to the new Tesla drivers and also adding to itself the fun of DT-990 musicality. An unbelievable convergence of all the good stuff. And it is this little DT-1350 that is more like mini-me baby-T5p to my ears. It, in fact, in early 2014, put the fist seeds of hopes in my heart that beyerdynamic would one day give us a better Tesla full-size can than T90/70/p or T1/5/p that is not treble-obsessed. The DT-1350 launch was beyerdynamic's "I have a dream" speech that nobody heard. DT-1770/1990 are the first results of the same speech that everyone is suddenly seeing now. A long way ahead and only great days ahead for a change (er, really?!). Thanks, beyer!

  Tough life...

It's fine though, I'm perfectly happy with the DT 1990. On the new one considering it's part of Beyers consumer line, it's probably going to be of the more analytical approach and I prefer the warmer and thicker approach to my sound, which the DT 1990 with balanced pads does very well for me. I've usually preferred how Beyer's Pro headphones sounded over their consumer line. Just wish the DT 1770/1990 used the same dual entry cables.

I still don't know if I pick the 1770 or 1990.
I like bass, maybe the JDS labs C5 bass boost could work for the 1990.

Both are excellent, I would suggest just getting the DT 1990 unless you need a closed back. Bass on the two isn't far off, the DT 1990 has a bit more mid-bass presence(with balanced pads) and the DT 1770 has a bit more sub-bass but not that much. For sub-bass I personally use my Nighthawks as it's better than both Beyers at it, but both Beyers satisfy me enough in terms of bass.

Do you have velour on your 1770?
