Soundmagic does this kinda stuff for Beyer. Looks and specs suggest a P30 is the basis for this phone. The cups, the relief, the swivels are the same. The Beyer version headband is rounder and not squared off. Not sure if it will be that good. The last cheap Soundmagic powered portable, the DTX300p just wasn't that popular around these parts.

I'm expecting a review sample from them this week. I'll be posting it in my next shootout. It does look a lot like the Soundmagic P30. I disliked the P20 that I reviewed a while ago, but only because you can't get a decent seal. The drivers were actually pretty good.

^Looking forward to your impressions.They look pretty sweet to me -- less flimsy-looking than the DTX 300 p, and they have a hard case. Around 50% more money though.

It will be a few weeks until my full roundup review is posted, but I recieved these the other day and my intial impressions are very good. SQ is excellent as is comfort. I have never tried the DTX 300p so I can't compare. There are some similarities the AKG compacts (K420/K430/K450) but with far better comfort IMO. Also the hard case is very nice...

It will actually be directly compared to the HD229 and HD239. All three are really nice phones.

I haven't ever had the chance to hear the es55, but it does look similar. What can you tell me about it?

I've got the DTX501p for replacement of broken AKG K450 and found 501p to be far better portable headphones.
K450 was too muddy in SQ for me, The 501p is extremely comfort, good sounding headphone with punchy bass and sparkling treble.
Also it's got famous beyer house sound signature. it's my staple on-the-go phones.
 
The only setback is its cheapy appearance and it is made in China.
If only it had DT1350/T50p like high‐grade sense exterior and were made in Germany.

Spot on, my full review of these will be up in a few days. I haven't heard the K450 but the Beyer smokes the K430 in all aspects. I agree that it has the Beyer sound sig. And yeah, the looks and materials are a bit pedestrian compared to the high-end models, but the fantastic SQ and comfort more than make up for that. I'm really glad to see Beyerdynamic get it right and finally have an entry in the compact portable segment that is worthy of the name and reputation. Most people would say they failed with the earlier DTX300p. The DT235 (I had the earlier DT231 Galactic) is a really nice sounding and comfortable headphone but with it's 8 ft. cord it leans more toward and gaming headphone and is probably not used as much as a portable. (Note: They sould take a hint from Ultrasone and revise it with a shorter cable as Ultrasone did with the HFI-15G.)

I feel exactly the same to you.
DTX501p would be the first "real" portable headphone that would be worth carrying Beyerdynamic's name around entry price range.
