So, my velours are quite nasty, and I have a friend who can get the gel pads from Germany (I live in Brazil, so I can't get them here). I found this on beyer europe site:

It has no info about compatibility. So, just to be sure, are these the gel pads that people use @ DT 990?

Yeah, they will work, but if you can find the clear gels they are much better.

Better aesthetically or sound wise? Or both?

Sound, comfort and durability. The clear ones are just much better, but they are hard to find.
 
If you click on my headphone invetory the  first picture is the D5ks with the clears. The black ones did not fit, sound or feel as good as the clear.

which town do you live,Numbskull?
I own a DT990 too,and although very comfortable indeed, the summer here in Porto Alegre make my ears sweat a lot...anyway not a big issue after all.Nonetheless i would be surprised if those gel pads make a great difference soundwise.
