Consumer Reports says that not only does it not clean the air, but its ozone emissions are potentially harmful.

On the basis of a Head-Fi thread I got HEPA filters instead. It is a pain to change the filters, but....

I have heard this many times. Supposedly they can cause big problems for people with asthma and allergies. These are the people that really need the filter.

I purchased an Austin Air Healthmate JR. I have allergies and it seems to help out a lot.

I've seen tons of warnings about different ion generating air cleaners. Good old hepa filters work just fine as long as they have a cheap pre-filter and are made by an established manufacturer that stocks replacement filters. I have a Honeywell that I've been using for years.

BUT, "don't you see the soot on the rods"
"it works"
yeah, and if I leave my cd player alone for a week, it'll be collecting soot, too.
An old fashioned Bionaire user with those shoe box looking filter user here. $30 per filter per yr is not that bad.

I've worked at the Sharper Image... everything they sell there is overpriced, junk, or both.

Well, the theory of how they work is what is used in the "Hospital Quality" Honeywell Electronic Air Filters that I had installed in my home in Ontario, California, years ago...I cleaned out the plates and wires about three times a year, and got POUNDS of soot, and little fibers out of it every time, and it took the smell of the smog out of the air in the house...it also cleaned up any cooking smells faster than anything...It sure made breathing easier when the smog was so bad that you couldn't see to the end of the block.

I know that the Sharper Image is WAAAY overpriced, so I recently bought an Electrostatic Cleaner and UV (with a fan) unit (brandname: LumiPure) from COSTCO, and it was only about $150...it processes the air with a high-output UV tube also, claims to sanitize the air, kill dust mites, and make your tires stay inflated...

Maybe it is the electromotive force required by the SI unit that makes it produce more Ozone...the LumiPure makes some Ozone (I am familiar with the smell from my exciting boyhood) but it is not objectionable to me...the wife likes to use the unit while we are out of the house...it has a timer for just that purpose. It does gather a lot of schtuff on its plates...

I'm a believer....

Yes, I tried an Ionic Breeze before. It's total crap. It's just an ionizer. It made my throat hurt and caused difficulties breathing.

If you want a real filter that is actually quiet look into Blueair or IQair.

I had an electrostatic air filter installed on the furnace at my last house. The fins definately attracted dirt/pollen/soot and whatever, but the ozone smell gave me headaches. It's true that the ozone smell is similar to the fresh smell after a thunderstorm ( apparently ozone is produced then as well ) but the electronic filter's was much too concentrated for me. My ex-wife didn't have a problem with it, but I couldn't take it. Also, I found cleaning the thing a real pain....way worse than replacing regular foam and charcoal filters. So after a couple of months I disconnected it. I now use a large, stand-alone Honeywell hepa filter and it seems to work well.
