My friend is offering me this
Diamond XtremeSound 7.1 sound card. It has the CMI8768 chip.

I was wondering if it is better than my mobo's(Evga 680i SLI) onboard which has:

1. 7.1channel HDA
2. 6 x audio - mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm
3. 1 x audio - SPDIF output

It's hard to say exactly which will be better but I don't think it will make too much of a difference. Is he offering it to you for free?

Well, not free. But he is waiting for me to give him an offer. I just bought a pair of AHD2000s and I'm completely broke so I can't afford a good sound card. If the sound card he has is better than my onboard then I will give him a couple bucks for it.

I use an XtremeSound XS71 that I won on eBay for about $10 shipped, the same card linked above. It sounds better than my on board sound: Realtek 850 7.1channel AC'97 audio codec.

I'm not familiar with your on board sound, so it's hard to guess whether you would prefer this sound card. I suggest not offering more than $10.
