Hi I have been looking for a home set of open cans. I picked up a set of DT990 cheap and they are fun for some things but now I would like a more balanced set. I mostly listen to rock and jazz. The HE400 DT880 and the Q701 seem to be the front runners they will be powered by a home receiver. Any thoughts on the three?

Yes what rubinstein says is correct. 
 
if the OP has the money for just the headphones right now he/she should get them. they will sound good un-amped and then you can get a good amp and DAC later to really make them shine.
