i was wondering what the members of head-fi believe the best recording of the chaconne in both the guitar and violin category was.

so far, i think milstien's ciaconna recording is the best.
don't know much about the guitar versions though.

For guitar, my preferences go to Nicola Hall (she recorded the whole partita plus some other pieces in a recital cd). A bit hard to find unfortunatly.

For some reason I have never been fan of the big names for that piece somehow ( Bream, Smith, ...)

For violin, although I liked milstein at the beginning ... later i was not. I like my beethoven sonatas more .. I do not know, natual, simple, humble. Not sure if these are the words.

After hearing a comparison between 10 versions on a french radio program, the one I prefered (globally for the partitas and sonatas) was Szeryng I (his first version).

Recently, I have been enjoying Viktoria Mullova a lot.

Please note I am not a violin/violonist specialist.

Milstein is certainly a contender for overall top honors, both in this case, and in the complete sonatas and partitas. You might check out Rachel Podger's HIP(ish) set on Channel. It isn't the only one you'd want, but it is certainly worth the effort to find.
