there is the apogee mini usb dac for 1100 dollars, and the headroom desktop amp with max dac at 1000 dollars.
i asked this a while ago and most people recommended that i use the Audiophile USB as a digital out and get an external amp and external dac. that's what i'm doing-although i havn't quite figured out which dac to use.

Look from the FIREBOX link --> two equal connectors on FIREBOX's rear panel, above MIDI-S/PDIF connector.
You can also buy a FireWire card by quite cheap price.

Agreed, nice colour (perhaps not so nice price).

BTW: That Presonus FIREBOX is true "pro gear" --> all (i.e. DAW owners) bying Presonus recording interfaces just have picked the FIREPOD instead of FIREBOX mostly because of it's better features (like 8 pre-amped (48V phantom power) mic inputs instead of 2 as on FIREPOD) --> lowered price.

I have the Firepod and all of its parts are very good, I even prefer the headphone amp to my PPA. good S/N ratio.

The Firebox should have the same sound, AFAIK.
