Best under $600 gaming headphones?

I would buy a really nice set of regular headphones and then add something like a modmic.com mic.  Sure, you have two cords, but then you can use whatever headphones you like and if you don't need the mic, you can remove the mic.

Here's Tek Syndicate's take, which I agree with.

AKG K712 Pro + Audio-GD NFB-11 + soundcard if you want DSP.

Since you're sparse on details, I'm assuming that's the kind of answer you're looking for?

Ye that's what I'm doing only thing is there is no headphones on that list that cost around $500 I would go up to $600 if there is a big difference in sound or comfort. I was thinking of either the he 400 or 500 but the 500 went up to $600 which is a bit much when I won't be able to keep them on for hours.

I had on my list:

Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro
Phillips Fidelio X2
HiFiMAN HE-400/HE-500

But the difference in price is a lot and I was thinking is it worth the 100 or 200 price jump?

When it started to get into the $500 range, the difference is not that much. For example the price range for headphone that is from $500-$1500 the difference is ~25%, you are probably not going to notice it in game either. So save up those money and get a better gaming accessory

My plan is DT880 Pro's and the modmic. If I get the headphones from Amazon they are $270 and the mic is another $50. That is the diminishing return point for me at this time. Any more and I would have to step up to $400 for headphones or $500. And the next step past that price range that I think I would like gets really close to $1000, which is nuts to me at this time.

I've already ordered the modmic 4.0 from massdrop, can't wait to test it.
