Best subwoofer to hook up to Audioengine 5s (and a couple of other random ?'s)

I would suggest considering subwoofer kits.. Over here Down Under, there is a company that designs and sells speaker/sub kits (http://www.theloudspeakerkit.com/).. Apparently it is comparable in SQ to speakers/subs 2-3 times its price.. This makes sense, since there is no labour costs, paint, lacquer, etc..

Or perhaps build your own from scratch, or even design yourself one! Could be a lot of fun

Hsu STF-1.

They are the go-to recommendation for most HT enthusiasts. It's musical, and will give you plenty of oomph.

Thanks you two, any pros and cons for each that differentiate between the two? Maybe styles of music or rooms that they're better for?

I know that's sort of vague, but since it's being used in a dorm room or apartment for casual listening and parties I don't need a super expensive audiophile set-up, but I don't want a piece of junk either. I guess somewhere in the $200-300 range max, but if there's a cheaper one that's a really good value for its price or a slightly more expensive one that's leagues beyond others in its price range I'll consider them.

(good to 30hz)

I wouldn't suggest anything cheaper, if sound QUALITY is important to you.

I'm interested to see what sub you go with. I just got a pair the black audioengine speakers and I'm finding the the bass is extremely lacking.

Are you serious? I agree that there is no sub bass, but IMHO the Audioengine5's have plenty of bass. Don't forget these are "bookshelf" speakers... compared to their competion the bass is outstanding.

Completely serious, that's why I'm reading this thread.
