Closed headphones under $100:

1st choice Beyer Dynamics BT231 - $59
2nd choice Sennheiser HD280 pro - $70

Open headphones, block some sound but not a lot:

1st choice Sennheiser PX100 $40-60
2nd choice iGrado (very close race) $45-50
3rd choice Ultrasone iCans (distant 3rd) - but they break the bank at $130 and are the worst of the 5 listed (still decent)

In-Ear earphones will block more sound than you'd like.

PS: I wont get to hear the Koss KSC-75 ear clips till next week, but they are $25 at radioshack, and I ordered some for $12 shipped on ebay. People rave about them all the time here.

I would get the original MDR-V6. The 7506 are just newly packaged V6 cans with minor mods and much more $$$. That said, I have owned my MDR-V6 cans since 1986 and they are still kicking. They look like crap because of age so I bought a second set a few years ago. Best sub-100 buck headphones all around. Comfy, take a lot of power and abuse and are well made. A bit bright in the treble but overall the best set of sub-100 buck cans.

On the question of MDR-V6 vs 7506, I was looking real close at the V6, but the more I looked, the more I started liking the looks of the dark gray sticker and the gold flashing on the 7506 plug. They just match the rest of my cans a little better!

Thirty bucks is a bit hefty for just a different look, but it has been mentioned that perhaps there is an internal difference because of the slightly different specs quoted by Sony.

...one person suggested a difference in internal shielding and another mentioned a tighter tolerance in driver matching. Whether either of these is true or not is open to interpretation, since as far as I know, Sony ain't saying!
