Hi there,

this is probably a bit of a noob question but I could not really find any information on this.

I recently got the Schiit Magni 2 headphone amp. Currently I'm using the headphone jack of my MacBook Pro as as a source. Levels on the MacBook are set about 80%. I know it would be best to use an actual line signal as a source for the Magni but I not really plan on getting a dedicated DAC just yet.

Now we get to my question:
I got a Blue Yeti microphone which actually has a build in DAC/AMP. Now I was wondering if I could do anything wrong if I just use it's output as a source for the Magni.

Can you actually damage and headphone amp by providing a source signal which is preamped (?) to heavily or has the wrong specifications? Or is the general rule - "If it sounds good it's fine." ?

The specifications of the Yeti are listet as:

Impedance: 16 ohms
Power Output (RMS): 130 mW
THD: 0.009%
Frequency Response: 15 Hz - 22 kHz
Signal to Noise: 100dB

I'm sure somebody can shed some light on this :) Thanks!

The headphone output jack on your Mac will make a decent DAC.
If you are considering getting an external DAC, check out Hifimediy.
Something in the $42-$70 range.

The MacBook sounds fine to me. However, I was wondering if there would be a downside in using the Yeti DAC/AMP -> Magni -> Headphones instead? The major upside is that the Yeti source provides latency free monitoring of the microphone.
