I have the SP90. The sound quality is OK, but far from excellent. I think this unit is far better at playing MP3 CD's than normal audio CD's. For example, while playing certain audio CD's in the SP90 I hear distortion through my Ety's. However if I put the same CD in my Sony home CD player and plug my Ety's into it's headphone jack instead, the distortion is gone. This never seems to happen with MP3 CD's though. The sound quality when playing MP3 CD's is generally good by comparison.

I haven't heard the new iRiver SlimX model yet. But from what I've read on various message boards, I suspect the SlimX sound quality is similar to the SP90. The Sony and Phillips units likely have the better sound quality, but lack the great user interface of iRiver's products. As such, I don't think the perfect MP3 CD player has been released yet. At this point it's a trade off between either sound quality or user interface.

btw BB, what kind of ety do u use? er6 or er4?

I'm using the 4P's on my SP90. It seems pretty quiet-- there's very little noticable hiss, if any. If I listen really carefully during an extremely quiet spot in a song I can sometimes very faintly hear hiss. But it is so faint and hard to hear that it's almost not worth mentioning.

I have read that the SP90/SP100 have less background hiss than the SP250. Never heard an SP250 though.

I have both the SP90 and the SP250. I'd say that both of them have quite a bit of hiss when I listen through my ER4P's. The hiss is much less noticeable through my Sony EX70's, Koss KSC50's, and Grado SR60's. Music with many soft moments, such as classical and jazz, brings out the hiss much more. On the other hand, I don't notice it much with pop, rock, or metal, because they're much louder on average.

I find that I have to use my Porta Corda or JMT CHA47 amp through the line out to get acceptable sound quality, to reduce the hiss. With this setup, the line out's hiss (the line out still goes through the EQ and amp) doesn't become apparent until you reach deafening volumes.

The extra 5 mW of power definitely makes a noticeable positive difference. The SP250's sound is quite a bit fuller. Also, the extra power is noticeable both through the headphone output, as well as through the line out.

Furthermore, remember that the SP250 has a 90 dB signal-to-noise ratio, while the SP90/100 have a 80dB SNR. That makes quite a bit of difference in the overall clarity and quality of the sound.
