Jari Maenpaa should definitely be on the list for metal soloists and songwriters. Amazing.

Tommy Emmanuel is up there for me--not necessarily for his technical prowess (which is amazing in its own right), but for his emotional playing and fantastic arrangements.

Well, judging by the topic I would have thought it was from "instrumental" music.

I'd change my list if it were otherwise.

Joe Pass for his playing and transposing of standards onto solo guitar is incredible.
Other great ones are Martin Taylor, Tuck Andress, Tommy Emmanuel.
I havent seen any flamenco players mentioned, but I think they play terrific solo renditions. Pepe Habicheula and Paco de Lucia are awesome.
Classical, the usual Julian Bream, Andres Segovia and John Williams, Pepe Romero, Kaori Muraji, Norbert Kraft and Emmanuel Rossfelder.

Lots of great guitarists in the thread, although I couldnt call them all "solo guitar", I think some confused it with "best guitar soloists". Solo guitar to me means unaccompanied guitar playing. Django could solo creatively without end but I cant put him here as solo guitar
