I snagged HD448's for $50 here...I feel they really benefit from the amp IMHO, but I really like them even unamped.  Worth looking into.
 
the AKG240 would be a great alternative if your not looking for hte Senn sound.
 
You might find HD555's used for a great deal.

I would have used the HD 448 for portable if my ears could fit. They have really excellent and refined presentation. Another alternative that is really great in the vein of the AKG 240 is the Superlux 668b, They are a great backup and cheap enough that I used to wear them as portables
