Best RPG games for SNES? (and non-RPG games too!)

Aug 21, 2008 at 9:48 AM Post #16 of 46
SUPER PUNCH OUT.

Best game ever period. Every other games have their sequels on the SNES itself or other platforms sometimes better or worse than the original. I have yet to play a boxing game worthy of Punch Outs dust. That my friend is a sign of true classic and greatness.

My opinion is far from being objective since I am a big fanboy of the punch out series starting from the arcades and NES versions beating Mike Tyson. Fanboy or not it is truely a great game.

Definitely what everyone has been saying: Chrono Trigger.

I remember having a lot of fun with the game F-Zero. The Donkey Kong Country games were a lot of fun too.

I went out to buy some of the aforementioned titles last year, in the UK, from stores like Gamestation and GAME.

Only copies I could find were in fairly tatty boxes... Chrono Trigger was £60 (about $120!).

I assume it was never officially released in the UK, so they buy them cheap from America and stick them on the shelf here with a huge markup.

Oh well, Snes9X runs on the EEEPC smoothly enough, so it'll have to do

Of RPG and jRPG, oh my god this is tought choice... Final Fantasy IV and VI (or labeled as II and III in western countries) are classics, and V is a gem that never saw its english release for SNES, but its rom copies got fantranslated for emulators, and finally we have now official PSX re-release, but its still SNES game. And Chrono Trigger is legendary! I cant choose between those four, they are all good for different reasons. If I would HAVE to choose, I might lean on Chrono Trigger now, but my mind might change on other day.

For other games, Super Metroid is obvious nobrainer.

In related news, Chrono Trigger is getting a DS port (no 3d remake, yay), definitely something to look forward to. It's supposed to contain new dungeons and perhaps even a multiplayer mode.

This thread is already full of excellent suggestions, but I'll add a few more since you know Japanese:

Dragon Quest I.II
Dragon Quest III
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest VI
Live A Live
Romancing Saga
Romancing Saga II
Romancing Saga III

I could probably go on, but I'll stop there. One word of warning about the Dragon Quests: the cartridges seem to very delicate and prone to file deletion, so if you have a DS, I recommend getting DQ IV and V (and VI when it's released) on the DS instead.

Is Actraiser part of that series?

I thought it went Soul Blazer->Illusion of Gaia->Terranigma->The Granstream Saga Quote:

I have some of the games mentioned above, such as FF series, Chrono trigger (best rpg game - perhaps ever, IMO), BOF, and zelda. I'll try to grab as many games as I can

Arguably the best RPG for the SNES, but ever? That's a bit of a stretch...

I wasn't listing them in order, just grouping them together since they were all developed by Quintet.

Lunar: The Silver Story was my favorite rpg EVER when I was a kid.

Even as I played it, it felt a little girly to me, but I still couldn't get enough. The story was great, as were the characters.

I think I played it on the PS though. DOn't know if it was available on SNES.

It probably because I was so young, but I don't think I have been as immersed in an RPG world since then.

Lunar is only on Sega Saturn and Playstation I believe. Bought the PSX one ages ago, great game albeit really short and linear.

Some of my favorites (coincidentally, most of them were Japanese-only but fan translated):

Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI
Seiken Densetsu 3 (part of the Secret of Mana series)
Tales of Phantasia (the Playstation remake is better though)
