1. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea

Just to get that out of the way, THIS is, to me, the best record ever recorded and definitely the best of the 90s. I urge you, with any semblance of power in your fingertips, to get ahold of this album somehow. This is a better album than OK Computer. It just is. Listen to it and you'll understand. Phew, now that I've said that, to the rest of the list...

2. Radiohead - OK Computer

Wow, until a few months ago, this was my favourite album of all time. Timeless, catchy and complex songs, layer upon layer of powerfully precise instrumentation and the and the best "tension song" ever written in Exit Music (For a Film).

3. Built to Spill - Keep it Like a Secret

The most edgy-yet-catchy rock music on the planet. Hyperbole aside, this is not pop music but somehow the hooks and choruses seem to stick in my head infinitely longer than a one-hit-radio song.

4. Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory

C'mon. This was my childhood.

5. And You Will Know Us From The Trail of Dead - Source Tags and Codes

I don't care how oligarchic Pitchfork is, they were right in giving this album a 10. This is a most virulently emotive album; they switch from seething anger to lazy thoughtfulness so quickly and effortlessly, and the album is better for it.

6. The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow

I have no reservations in saying that, despite the awfully catchy poppiness of this record, the individual songs will survive time's critical scrutiny. My favourite album of 2003 by far.

7. Alanis Morrisette - Jagged Little Pill

This album changed music forever. Whatever way you look at it, the mid-90s was made up of pre-Alanis and post-Alanis alternative rock. But this is an absolute classic.

8. Air - Moon Safari

Not quite rock, but this is my chill album. Day after day. I never tire of it.

9. Nirvana - Nevermind

Nevermind.

10. Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place

Ever wanted to literally feel pure joy through music? This is the only album I can consistantly listen to that brightens my mood. It just does.

Excuse the inordinately excessive hyperbole. I love these albums though. LOVE THEM!

Now go out and listen to Neutral Milk Hotel.

OK, i'll bite:

1. Ride - Nowhere (1990) the most perfect of all rock/indie albums, i swear i will never get tired of this gem.

2. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (1991) still light years ahead of its time.

3. Catherine Wheel - Ferment (1992) one of shoegazing's finest. perfect blend of rawk, crunch, and ambience.

4. Suede - Suede (1993) single-handedly started the rebirth of Brit-pop and one of the best Pop albums of all time.

5. James - Laid (1993) breathtaking soundscapes set into the best songwriting the band has ever done, and the most amazing Brian Eno production of all time.

6. Oasis - Definately Maybe (1994) hmm... needs no introduction.

7. Blur - 13 (1999) the band's most adventurous, experimental, and heartfelt album.

8. Primal Scream - XTRMNTR (2000) anger, rock, noise, and electronics never sounded so good!

9. The Cure - Bloodflowers (2000) a fine return to form, one of the bands best albums and well deserving to be part of the trilogy that also contains "Pornagraphy" and "Disintegration."

10. Radiohead - Kid A (2000) undeniably hyped, undeniably successful, undeniable genius.

How are we defining "rock" for the purposes of this thread?

So far I agree with:

Nirvana - Nevermind
nirvana: in utero
System Of A Down - Toxicity
Pearl Jam – V.S
Radiohead--Bends
Radiohead- Kid A
Radiohead - OK Computer
Blur - 13
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR (no one knows this one in the States, and it's mind-blowing)
wilco: yankee hotel foxtrot (but gotta have Summer Teeth, too!)
PULP - Different Class (but I'd add This Is Hardcore and We Love Life, too!)

I'll come up up with some others of my own later.
