Hello,

I'm looking for a full set of headphones around the 150 USD mark but would prefer at a lesser price if the difference in SQ and bass is not all that noticable. I will be using these primarily for movies.. so I expect decent SQ and a bit of thump to it because I like a lot of action/thriller movies.

Right now I'm leaning towards DT770s as they seem to be almost universally loved around here and price would be around $160 which I can do.. Plus they will deliver on movies/music and bass. But what about the Grado SR80, 125, MS1 ? They should have similar soundstage, detail and possibly bass as the DT770s? And let's not forget the price difference which is around 40 to 60 dollars.

I haven't looked at the sennheiser's, AKGs, Audio technicas all that much but I'm sure there are great alternatives out there. Any recommendations?

Indeed the DT770 may be what you are looking for, but I've only listened to those for perhaps five hours only.

MS1 are nice for movies IMO but may not have the bass you are looking for.

JVC Victor HP M1000 shouldn't be discounted. Nice range. Bass doesn't disappoint after burn in.

My Ultrasone HFI700 are my preferred choice for movies, but outside your budget. I don't know if lower priced Ultrasones deliver.

Audio Technicas may be worth looking into. The ones I've heard seem a little warm but with a good soundstage (A900)

I bought some Sennheisers years ago and didn't like them, and sold them soon after. Sennheiser 'veil' it was for me.

AKG k271 were too thin sounding for blockbuster movies for me.

Others here, will be able to help you more.

Fot movies, the dt770 will be OK. I much preferred the Audio Technica A900s. You can find these used for around 150. They provide the bass thump you're looking for with better highs and detail than the dt770s.

The DT770s are addictive for movies, I haven't heard any other headphones with more adequate bass response for those action movies at this price level.

For music, depending on what you're listening to, there might be better alternatives.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I think I've narrowed down my choices between these

- M-audio Q40
- Sennheisser 555
- AKG ad700
- equation rp-22x
- Denon d1000k
- DT770

DT770 seems the best choice but if I could.. I would like to save the 50-60 bucks by choose one of the top 4 which all cost around $100. Again to reiterate.. I would mostly be listening to trance, pop, some hiphop and lots of movies... for movies I expect good bass and soundstage with good detail. Also, I don't anticipate buying an amp.

How do the senns, denons and the ad700 sound. Are they compatible with what I'm looking for?

I would suggest Grado SR80s, but I agree that A) not enough bass and B) they are tuned more for music, and merely sound "OK" for films and gaming.

ad700 is also open. "A" series isn't and has more bass.

from my experience, take out the HD555 and ATH-AD700 (ATH-A700 would be better cuz of being closed)...

i vouch for the dt770pro... comfortable+bass+great SQ = winner @~$150
