I am listening to my DENON's AH-D2000... heaven! problem is I want to listen to those same sounds with closed portable ones (not noise cancelling please). I have a pair of Sennheiser PX200-II which I like for their size BUT of course they don't get even close to this sound... what would be your best shot? I wanted the Denon D1001 but now they are discontinued.

Many thanks,

Hey Sleepless64,

It really depends on the type of music you listen to and the sound you like.  A good resource to help you make your decision is:

Three quick options that spring to mind are the Sennheiser HD25-1's, the TMA-1 headphone from AIAIAI and the Audio Technica M-50s.

Good luck!

Why not just get the Creative Aurvana Live for $60? It uses the same driver as the Denon D1001. Amazon has them in stock! I bought a pair yesterday.

My favorite portable unamped is the KRK KNS-6400 with memory foam pads. Probably one of the rare headphones that's good for EVERY genre.
I could sell off all my headphones and be satisfied with these I think.

x2 on the Creative Aurvana Live.  Why do you want closed in particular though.  Most closed headphones, including the Creative and PX-200, are really worthless at isolating and unless you listen at levels that is detrimental to your hearing in the long run, most open headphones don't really leak much.  The Senn PX-100-II have stronger bass than the Creative, and are more comfortable. But they are open.

I prefer closed due to isolation... I thought... but you're making me reflect on that. Thanks. You think the Senn PX 100 II have stronger / deeper bass than the Senn PX 200 II and the Denon AH-D1100?

I've never heard teh PX200-II, but the Creative has the same driver as the AH-D1001 and the PX-100-II has stronger bass.  The strongest bass in that same price range would be the Sony XB-500.  Those are true bass head headphones.  I personally prefer the PX-100 or Creative, but I listen to a lot of genres that don't sound as good with a big emphasis on the bass.  If you listen to bass heavy music though, the XB500 might suit you.  You might also be able to try them out at a Best Buy or Sony Style store.

Looking in |joker|'s thread http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/433318/shootout-84-portable-headphones-reviewed-fischer-audio-fa-004-koss-ur55-added-06-06, it looks like the PX100-II has more bass than the PX200-II.  He calls it aggressive mid bass in the PX100 vs slightly rolled off bass in the PX200.

BTW, that thread is the best resource for buying portable headphones.

After spending money on 4 or 5 different "portable" models, around 2 years of trial and error, I finally got decent sound, much thanks to guidance in this. I finally went for the Sennheiser 25-1 II. It's sad to see that no really great portable headphones exist, but this are very good; not a consumer design and all plastic but very good sound without being "heaven" as some people say.

I used them with my loosless files (music) and Bithead portable amp. I hope someday soon, one company goes for the great headphones. Thanks for all this guidance.

I have the AH-D1001 and I love them. I've thought about getting a pair of the CAL! but I can't imagine they are as comfortable.

The AIAIAI Tracks are nice for an ultraportable, too. I reviewed 16 portable phones (still haven't posted all the reviews) in this thread:

The closest to the D1001's in terms of sound were the PX-100 II. Just a bit darker and warmer. They are awesome as well...

I imagine the CAL! will not isolate if they are anything like my D1000/D1001. If I were you I would look up an M-80, Z1000 or ES10 as they all have a warmish tone. Also, the D1100 is no where near as great as the DX000 series. Soundstage is big and tall but the mids are way too recessed for my liking. The bass is pretty big and impactful though. Great for a basshead.
