well, since UM2 is a very sensitive earphone.

I would recommand you look into amp that has adjustable gain, so far the list are

1) RSA Hornet = $350
2) Headroom MicroAmp = $299
3) Xin SuperMini-3 = $199

I would say yes. However to ensure optimal benifits, I advise using the line out of the Ipod which can be accessed from an aftermarket solution like the Pocket dock, Ram Din, Sik Din, or TURBO Dock.

1 vote for Xin SuperMini-3 because it is on sale right now $149.99. Sales end until 27/11/2005. It is about the size of a credit card.

I have a 5g iPod with UM2's, and I recently purchased an SR-71. I've been very pleased with how it sounds. The only real issue is because the UM2's are such low impedance, I don't turn the amp up more than 1 quarter turn.

Don't know if this impacts the sound of the SR-71 to run it so low in the volume range, but it works for me.

Anyway, I think the SR-71 brings out the good qualities of the UM2's, and gives me a sound that I like. enough bass to please, and good High's with some high EQ boost from the iPod. YMMV, of course.

There's been some positive feedback regarding the Xenos 3HA/UM2, probably due to the separate bass & treble controls. I'm considering it myself

The Xenos 3HA/UM2 combo is a winner, since so many of my tunes have different styles and mixes. The amp sounds very good, albeit not as crystalline as more expensive amps. A very good value, however.

Using the z-Audio Lambda and an OPA2227 op amp, I'm getting pretty good results in a more compact package. I'm still testing dual op amps to find out if there's one that's even better.

A good amp with single and dual op amp rolling capabilities will give you the benefits of very different sounds at a bargain price, but be prepared for a period of trial and error.

Both the Xin and Larocco amps give you very nice flexibilitiy, too.

If the budget is $300 I'd go for the Supermacro *right now* before the special ends. I second the Turbo Dock, it's cool.
