I use JRiver Media Center and install their WDM driver. I can then take advantage of all their DSP possibilities. The driver works with all sources including streaming sources like YouTube or Rhapsody.
bob katz said the algorithmix orange is best eq he ever heard and measured in his life, problem is it cost 1200euro and yes its only software VST,not hardware, but its best EQ on planet, you get what you pay for
theoreticaly if you upsampled pcm to like couple MHZ range, then applied linear phase eq and downsampled back that would be good, higher the samplerate = less ringing
i can recommend this one http://www.equalizerpro.com/ it is simple and i am satisfied because it is a hustle free apps, all settings are there and also you can make your own presets .
If you are using Pure Music as the default player - which I highly recommend ( I have tried several including the overpriced alternative ). Try Fabfilter Pro Q2 as an plug-in to PM. This is extremely versatile and transparent. If a little pricey, but it is worth it.
