Best output for Chord DAC 64

WOW! Someone actually discussing a Cyrus product...

I just picked up a Cyrus CD6 and although this is a bit off-topic I would love to know how it fares. From my listening at an audio store - the Cyrus CD6 was virtually indistinguishable from the CD-8x but for the improved high end sparkle and body of the 8X. Tradeoffs I would gladly make for the difference in price.

Both units had the PSX PSU upgrades. Both were driving the same amp - 8vs and the same speakers = Rega R9

Another issue with the CD6 is the lack of a coax digital output. This is a downer because one of my favorite DACs (Ack Dack!) uses coax input only...well...maybe cyrus is confident about their jitter correction but I would have liked a coax option on the less expensive player

Gsferrai, do this mate....tonight when its quiet and there is a lack of background noise..etc. Play your music on a low volume and listen for a spinning sound, fingers crossed u dont hear it, but if u do, thats the reason I sold my CD8. The mechs just too flippin noisy!

GS&Fickle friend>The CD 6 and CD 8 use a newer phillips mechanism. The old cyrus cd 7 used the old phillips mech. The reason why cyrus had to choose this mech is the cd 7 mech is no longer in production.

Cyrus cd 7 mech was dead silent. As for the cyrus DacXP. It's a good idea and it performs quite well but the chord dac 64 2 and a seperate pre-amp or integrated would be better all round performer. When I had a Cyrus system it was more like this.

cd7+psx-r>cyrus acpre7.5+psx-r>2Xcyrus Apa 7.5 mono.

I then added a chord dac 64 version 1 and then it really flew.

This is awesome news. I will just put a hold on my order. I already have the micromega and wanted the CD6+6vs because they go well together. Not anymore...transport noise is something I simply cannot deal with.

GS>I have not heard the Cd8 so I cannot comment on the transport nosie. This could be down to an production batch of mechs. You can always buy or audition one and if you feel there is a mech noise just send it back for a refund.

Fickle friend CD 8 might of been a one off or it might not.

I think you are selling you self short on one post about mech noise. Every manufactuer has at least one unit which does not perform to standard. Why should Cyrus be any different.

Think about it.

You are right as usual. I will wade into this later. I spent the whole of yesterday morning auditioning the CD6/6vs and the CD8X/8vs combos at a store...both sounded excellent...the 8 series had more oomph!

I will go back there with the micromega and try out various combos.

interesting times...

I bought the CD 8 this time last year and had it sent back 3 times over that time period before I just sold up. I had them compare the noise to their "reference CD player" and apparently it was almost the same. They wouldnt comment on the reference CD player though. I took it instore, Sevenoaks that is and the clowns there simply told me 1. Sit away from the cd player and 2. listen to music a little more louder. Pathetic!

Almost all cd players make a little noise when moving tracks or when the cd starts again after finishing but in my experience I could hear a churning, spinning sound. This really ruined a low level back ground musical experience on a nite for me.

Dont get me wrong, the CD 8 is a stonking cd player. The detail it digs up is awesome, I found it to be more clinical than my Ikemi and do miss that aspect of it but the noise oh the noise!

I pretty sure the Cyrus CD 9 or whatever is due next will not have the same CD Rom drive.

Finally got my hands on the DAC 64. I'm been playing tunes with the full buffer setting. The 4 second delay is a pain but there is a clear difference with it on and off.

This is a pic of the set up:

Seems there is more a difference on the high end than low end. The DAC definately makes it a forward presentation. But im only using a standard Toslink at the moment. Still not decided upon termination???
