A buddy is looking to add a Klipsch 2.1 or Logitech 5.1 speaker system to his Macbook for movies and music.

This here is what his macbook has for ports

I don't know if that headphone jack is optical, and apparently neither does he. I'm not sure how to find out.

I'm a PC guy so I'm not sure how to advise this dude.
Can you guys help me out here?

Yes, it's optical.

So he can get a cable from monoprice,
go from the optical out of the macbook,
into the Toslink input on the Logitech 5500,
and now he can has 5.1 goodness.

Unless I'm missing something here...
that'll work out just dandy.

Better than him spending $400 on a USB Bose system

Thank you for the help Oliver.

Can Macs now do 5.1??
Last time I checked they couldn't.
I might be out of date here.

In the midi menu (intel macs) it has the ability to do 7.1.

I use my Macbook as the main source for my A/V rig. My amp resolves the DTS automatically with no problem, but it has to be set to a specific setting to resolve the Dolby 5:1. I think that is more a matter of my amp than the Macbook though.

Shouldn't you just be able to slap a DVD into the Macbook which you then connect to the digital in on your AV amp?

Yes. My amp is supposed to automatically detect the type of sound and put it out in that format. For some reason it always automatically selects the DTS channel, but if it's just Dolby 5:1, I have to set it for Dolby manually.

The connection is simple. It's just an optical cable.

See ya

Is the MIDI menu something that should show up in system preferences?

Erm, yeah; sorry.
My shorthand got the better of me. I was indeed referring to my 17" MacBook Pro 2.6ghz.

No, it's in Audio-MIDI-configuration. You find it in Applications -> Utilities.

Hi all, new here! Been lurking for a while though don't have much to say. Been spending much time on the Zero Dac thread

Just to say that I have successfully used the optical out of my MacBook to get DTS and Dolby Digital while it was hooked up to my Logitech Z-5400s. It was great, a real wall of sound for movies. It lacked definition though for music so I bought the aego 5 system (same price as logitechs). It really is a good piece of kit and definition is back with clean highs. Though currently looking for a decoder for dts and dd (contemplating waiting for the HD stuff coming through)...
