Biggest disapointment so far : Minutes to midnight - Linkin Park.

Seems like they drank so much beer they couldn't take it anymore, then made an album. So slow and clumsy, they don't seem to know where they are going.

Glad I decided not to get it then. I read quite a lot of reviews with similar opinions, and I'm really not sure I'd be very happy with that style. However, my birthday is coming up shortly so I can imagine someone giving it to me anyway

Sage Francis - Human the Death Dance
The National - Boxer

Those are my two standouts of the year so far.

so far i've been liking:

nina nastasia and jim white - you follow me
folky singer/songwriter stuff. beautiful vocals and intuitive, subtle drumming.

kieran hebden and steve reid - tongues
that steve reid provides more top-notch drumming accompanying (albeit not obviously in some cases) kieran (aka four tet's) electronic warbling.

panda bear - person pitch
blissed out, lush pop music. more reverb than anything this side of my morning jacket. sounds like it was recorded underwater or way out in the ether somewhere.

shins - wincing the night away
i'd say better than "chutes too narrow," still not as good as "oh, inverted world." kind of a blend between the two to my ears

au revoire simone - the bird of music
three hot hippy chicks with keyboards and a drum machine. really catchy, nice music. sounds a lot (sometimes a real lot) like the postal service. there are a couple tracks that are a little too syrupy for me but i like it a lot on the whole.

ellen allien and apparat - orchestra of bubbles
this album reminds me of dntel. sideways beats with some organic cello and that asian flat lying guitar that i'm sure has a name thrown in to good effect. i like it a lot the more i listen. as close to "house" as anything i've come to like. can't imagine what this album would sound like with a flashy setup.

As an update for me, I spent some time with The National's Boxer and while it wasn't THE best of the year it is definitely a stand out and worth the price of admission. It's a solid four out of five record. As for Interpol's new record, I need to do some more listening but so far I'm really not impressed. It's not a bad listen but is overall rather bland. May be worth the price for the last track, Lighthouse though.

Fear of a Blank Planet(PT) and Mirrored(Battles) have already been mentioned.

However, I didn't see "Prog" by the Bad Plus mentioned. And no, they are not a prog rock band as you may guess, they are a jazz trio. Anyway, it is a fabulous album.
