I hate to brag, but I'd have to say the one in my sig is a contender: Sony D-NE920.

Clean sound quality, line-out and optical out, unbelievable battery life, LCD on case and remote...an excellent source for the price, imho. Looks great too.

I chose it over the D-NE20 - they're the same player, but the 920 has an LCD on the case, which is handy if you don't want to use the remote, or if you want to use an optical connection.

You'll most likely have to buy them online. They're not geared for the casual consumer who go to retail stores. (I mean, most non-audiophiles would laugh their heads off about buying a portable CD player above $100.)

We're still waiting for Sony to update their top of the line portable CD players though. (Specifically D-NE_0 and D-NE9_0 series.)
