This definitely has more to it then simply "helium 7 is better".
All the player has to do is decode the file and send it off as a stream. The only way to get different qualtiy would be if one is bypassing the kernal driver and is bit perfect or one is adding some sort of effect. I will look into this further, but from a completely technical point, a player can only change the sound if processing is being applied.
