Based on the dap's I've owned and heard, hands down, the rio karma. Best EQ without a doubt. Second place is the nomad juke box 3, but its huge. The iriver H1xx series are good too, thanks to rockbox. Take a look and see if you can find a rio karma in good shape, it's a wonderful sounding dap.

I've only demo'd it, don't feel like I can judge it honestly. The fact that it inherited the Karma's EQ definitely earns it big points.

I assume this was meant to refer to the Vibez, not the iMOD, right?

Yeah, I don't know what happened there. Looks like I clicked quote on the wrong post.

How would you compare the Gigabeat's sound quality with the Karma? I'm hoping to see a comparison between the Zune and the Vibez, so a Gigabeat/Karma comparison should be in the ballpark.

tman, because the underlying hardware is so different, I would not expect the Vibez and Karma to sound the same. What they have most in comon is feature set and the customizable EQ. IMHO, the level of customization of the EQ on both the Vibez and the Karma go a long long long way since you can tune the sound to your liking, much more so than any other player on the market.

As far as a baseline EQ=Off type SQ test, I'm confident Vibez <> Karma.

Thanks. Do you mean that you think the SQ would be 'different, but equal'? (IOW, does "Vibez <> Karma" mean you think they would be equal quality, despite thinking they would not sound the same??)

I know I could look this up, but while we're on it - what is the EQ like on the X5 and the Zune? (I think I read that the Zune only had presets, but the X5 was customizeable - if so, how many freq bands, and how 'good' is it? How are the Zune presets?)
