I'm in the market for headphones around the $400 range. Right now my main options are the Beyerdynamic T90s, the AKG K702 65th Anniversary, the AKG K712, the Mr. Speakers Mad Dog, and the Sennheiser HD600-HD650. I've been researching deeply and can't really come up with a good decision as far as finding headphone that can be good for critical listening and proficiently handling the genres I listen to. I do a lot of production and mixing and mastering so something with an honest transparent sound would be ideal. I listen to jazz (instrumental), classical, electronic, ambient, r&b, and rock. Anything that could point me in some direction would be great. I'm driving these with a HiFiMAN ef2a, but if I purchase something sub $400, I'll consider buying an additional amp. Again any information/reference will help.

Thanks!

HE400. Neither K70x nor HD6x0 is so versatile as you need. Of the rest on your list, MrSpeakers. If you want a Fostex mod, consider ZMF. (I haven't heard T90 yet.)

He400 is good for your genres, but probably not for mixing/mastering.

I've heard the HE400 is a great headphone and would probably compliment my ef2a pretty well, but what about for mixing and mastering?

I would guess that davidsh is right, but ask on the HE400 thread.

HE-400 is not the best for mixing due to the treble and bass being more prevalent than the mids.

i think the Mad Dog is probably one of your best bets.

Maybe look into Brainwavz HM5, a clone of Fischer Audio FA003 (with very slightly more bass?). I'm curious about it too. See this review by LFF of the original:

Decided to go with the T90 after hearing my friends pair, I'll be posting a review shortly after the new year! Thanks for all the input, I think my next pair of cans after these will be a Fostex mod. But for now I really wanted that open, honest sound.
