I'm looking for a good set of closed over-ear (or even on-ear) headphones for under or around $250. I'm not sure what sound profile I would prefer, but I listen to modern classical, indie rock, ambient, some metal. I would be mainly listening at work from my iPhone. Would prefer to not need an amp, but if I do, what's a decent option?

Best mid-range for under $250 and my musical taste?

I would like ok at the Meze 99 Neo and the 1More Triple Driver Over Ear
Look at the Meze 99 Classics. There is also the Neo’s which are a bit cheaper but haven’t heard them yet. Runs fine from my iPhone 6S Plus. Just going for some Metal and Anthrax ,Slayer and Megadeth sound pretty good to me.

Definitely look at the Neo. I had them sold them (stupidly) then ended up getting a really good deal on the 99C. Both are great. Neo are a little more midrange friendly
I would suggest that you also look at a SoundMAGIC HP151. It sounds terrific and is quite comfortable. Maybe read about it and see what you think. It is possible it could work for you. Would save you a bit of cash, too.
Can consider Sennheiser HD4.30 (HD4.40 and HD4.50 if you preferred wireless and noise cancellation).
Thanks for the suggestions. The Neo looks intriguing. Would either the V-Moda XS or M100 work for these genres? I know the M100 is bass heavy.
