Actually the threshold is if the duty + GST on the imported goods is less than $100, they don't bother charging. Practically, that means that for headphones the threshold for the product is a bit over $1000... but YMMV.

That is misleading, did you even bother checking the customs site?
Generally, all goods imported into Australia are subject to Customs duty and GST and are assessed for community protection risks. However, all goods (except for tobacco and alcoholic beverages) may be imported duty and tax free if the value of the goods is A$1000 or less.

I doubt 'a bit over' is acceptable to customs as you must declare its real value.
Please provide evidence of the "$100 threshold"

Apologies, seems that the rules might have changed since I bought my ACS T2PROs in March 2006 - the information provided by 2162 is supported by the Customs FAQs.

I recently got a pair of superfi3's from earphonesolutions in the states. (I'm in Sydney).

I received them within 3 days of ordering. Not only were they cheaper than anywhere else in Australia (including shipping), but their shipping times were faster...can't believe they're on the other side of the world.

They also accept Paypal. Which was a big plus.

I couldn't be happier with the sound these "budget" IEM's have.

Funnily enough I'm also about to buy a D2 now.

Sony's MDR-EX85 are good-RRP is $129 and can be purchased locally, also look at some Sennheisers.

Ultimate Ears: aus. distributors prices are $350-$500-out of your price range.

Sony's EX85/90-under $200, latter is $199.

Take a look at Shure SE110:$139 locally.
