Hi guys. My family and I are going through some tough times. Last week our house caught fire and much of our property was destroyed. Our insurance is taking good care of us and we are going to be totally fine. Nobody was hurt and nothing of true value like photos, documents, or other family heirlooms were lost.

Anyways, our 65" Mitsu TV, DVD collection and other home theater equipment is all melted in a big pile of goop. I was thinking of what to replace it all with.

I was thinking of a 60" DLP Samsung TV and maybe an HD-DVD or Blu Ray player, but I'm a little behind on the times with speakers and receivers and stuff.

We pegged the value of our stereo equipment at $2000. Can someone suggest how I should split that money for a speaker system and receiver?

Thanks.

audiogon is your friend: www.audiogon.com

Forget Crutchfield, way too overpriced, imho.

i'd pick up a Panasonic SA-XR57 receiver for about $200-250, and spend the rest on a 6.1 X-series setup from www.av123.com

So true. I don't even want to fathom our situation if we didn't have it.

Glad you're covered and the important stuff (family etc.) is ok!

I'm a big fan of Atlantic Technology speakers and Yamaha receivers, but much like headphonia, the sky's the limit. You could spend $2000 on a single speaker with ease.

As for how to split it, how "into" the HT experience are you? A $500 Receiver with $1500 worth of speakers would be better than most any HT in a box system. Remember - speakers will work with any new 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, 73912.1 system that comes along (just add speakers!) - the receiver might not. That's why I like to invest in good speakers.

Get a 60" SXRD 1080p or BRAVIA. Get the $399 PS3. Get Denon for receiver (7.1). JBL for speakers. You are good to go.
