Why would tubes be intimidating for a newbie? There really no big deal with lots of info available here. Huge coolness factor too. Should also consider nOhr tube amp with K1000 and a good used source. If you don't want tubes then a nice used Adcom GDA535 amp is said to work well with these cans and can be had for $150-$200. Going to a Hi-Fi store for Headphone gear is not the best idea. They're not likely to have much of what we talk about here unless it's quite a specialty store.

For nOrh/K1000 combo check out this F/S thread, but better act fast:

I have yet to hear a real clone of the RA-1.
Actually I've yet to hear any DIY amp that is as neutral as the RA-1.

Sure you can say I'll build it for $80 but who has and compared it to the RA-1?

Quick question about the 963SA... Does it do progressive scan and component video outputs and all that good stuff? I was thinking about getting a universal system since I have a nice TV now (the Sony 40" Directview Wega XBR). I've noticed that the DVD output of my DVD player just doesn't cut it...

chinchy: short answer is, YES!

But, the 963 isn't really a universal player... doesn't do DVD audio.

Thanks all for the replies! My cousin has looked at thread, and called me on the phone. From my conversation, she agreed that she has a large rebook Cd collection(450) She liked my phones (sr325's). She is leaning torward:

Source: NAD 541I or MH CD25
Amp: Headroom Little with upgraded power suply or Gilmore V2.
Interconnects: Outlaw PCA's
Phones: 325's or RS1's

Her main concern was putting together a system that would be trouble free, so she opted for a SS amp. I want to thank everybody's input. I told her to joinup, so shes thinking about it, she's not too computer savy!. Thanks all once again!

Sincerly,
Richard

She should be fine with the choices above.
The Little is under rated and has an upgrade path.

Nice system.

orl2222, if your cousin should decide on the HeadRoom Little, IIRC Tyll Hertsens and/or Todd Green have been steering folks toward the Premium Module upgrade instead of the More Power upgrade. Again IIRC, the rational is that the current-production stock PS is already fairly decent.
