What are the best headphones under <1000usd (best bang for the buck) and after >1000usd (money no object)? Maybe you can write a top 3 for each price range.

Seems like the W5000, RS1, K1000, and GS1000 are the tops near the $1k price range. The K1000 isn't being made anymore, but you can possibly find one at a retailer (I just did) or find it used.

Then you've got the AKG K700, HD650, Beyer DT880. Those are the usual 3 reccomendations.

There are others definitely, but those are some of the names to look out for.

And remember, they all need good amps.

Come on now, don't give folks false hope. At least be fair and say that you were lucky as heck to find the pair you did. Now you'll have folks calling up dealers hoping to find one....

Anyway, if the AKG K1000 were so good, why did they discontinued them?

They look goofy as hell, and were expensive. They also need special things to run real nice. They also fly against many of the reasons people get headphones in the first place.
