These will be my first "real" headphones, I've been using iPod earphones and similar Sony ones, but they break every few months so I've decided to get a good pair of headphones. I've been looking at the Sennheiser HD280-Pro's for a while, that's how I found this site. But it seems like there are mixed opinions about those here.

They'll be for just listening to music off my computer. I listen to mostly different types of metal and punk music, but I do listen to the odd alt/indie stuff. And if it has isolation then that'll be good, it doesn't have to though, I just don't want the sound to leak too much.

So should I stick with the HD280 or are there better headphones for that price range? I hear the ATH-AD700 are good too but they seem a bit to pricey...

I have a pair of Maudio Q40s, they are closed and don't leak much sound at all. I really enjoy them with my music. Probably a bit similar to what you listen to.

Can't vouch for any other phones sorry.

Actually around AU$215 but I reckon they're worth it.

i JUST got some sr-80i's and they are awesome for metal and punk as is stated heaps on this forum, and as AU$180

i tried some AD700's out in a shop and wasn't all that impressed - but didn't have my own music there to listen to - they are definately more comfortable and more airy as you'd expect from headphones that are twice the size

$200 AUD is about $150 USD right? You should be able to find AD700 within that range easily. I don't know how it works in Australia but if you can't find anything decent for local shipping, you should try to look around on eBay for international shipping. Again, I am not sure if there would be some kind of sales tax or something attached to ship from outside Australia.

If you're willing to wait a bit, HD580s pop up in the for sale forums for around $150 US or a bit over every now and then. Adding in shipping that'd probably push you over to $250 AUS but then they'd be solidly hi-fi material and would also give you upgrade potential for an amp too down the track.

Other than that AD700s are okay, absolutely great for indie but a bit light on the bass for metal/punk and probably not that articulate although I don't really have many comparisons I can make in that price range other than with my HD600s. They definitely leak sound though. MS1s are also often recommended here for metal/rock at that price range, personally I've only sampled them but am not really a fan.

Australian prices are slightlyoverpriced :p the cheapest in the shops is about $220 AUD

Yes AD700 is light on the impact side, bass notes are ok (straight out of iPod, and onboard sound card).. Just listened to it today my friend have it, and i didnt like it at all :p
