Allright so, with christmas coming, I've been thinking of buying myself a nice pair of headphone + possibly an amp. I listen mostly to hardstyle and black/death metal. My budget would be around 550-600$ so any suggestions ?

Welcome to Head-Fi and sorry for your wallet

And if your going to be spending $200-600 on headphones an amp is not really a choice but a necessity. I'd save give it a 60/40 split when buying an amp and headphones. $300 phones and a $200 amp.

I'm sure the others can help you more.

Watch the FS forums and you can get a good deal on phones and amps that would normally be out of your price range.

I think that knowledge is much important that amps actually. Of course, you can buy an amp in no time while knowledge is another matter.

You want to know what would be the best for you... and I can understand that. But no one can tell you that. We can give suggestions but, if you really want the best, you'll have to try many things... and trying them for a few minutes is most likely not going to be sufficient.

I would rather buy a set of very different headphones that are known for their good value rather than some extravagant top-of-the-line toy. You can often get the best value by buying used and out-of-production items.

I'll look at it, I'm still searching/waiting for suggestions for the best pair that would suit me tho so I don't really know what I'm look for yet.

@Hfat: I know that, that's why I'm waiting for suggestions, I made this thread cause I thought that maybe there would be something considered great for that kind of music so that I can look further into it.

Here are some suggestions:
-look into opportunities to listen to stuff (friends, shops, meets, whatever)
-look into different technologies
-look into different types of earcups
-look into different brands
-look into the preferences of people who like the same music you do

Ok if you want suggestions, how about a Beyer DT880 and a nice amp.

If you really enjoy bass, you might want to consider the Beyer DT770. I have the DT990 and find it a little more balanced, but I also had the DT770 for a while and enjoyed it.
