IMHO, the Stax Sigma/404 hybrid is just wonderful for vocals - its forte.

For rock/metal with female vocalists I'd have to say Grado SR325is. Seriously, don't knock 'em if you haven't heard 'em.

Those highs make symphonic sopranos sound fantastic.

Ok...good timing, as I'm listening to Judy Garland's Carnegie concert right now on my HD600 phones connected to a Darkvoice 336i amp and Sony DVP-S7000 DVD player. She sounds just dynamite: ever so slightly relaxed and unstrained (unlike Grado phones for instance), full, meaty/beefy, sound that is quick and detailed while being incredibly velvety and engaging. Think of the HD600 for vocals like a nice aged scotch, with something like Grado 225 or AKG K701 more like vodka - each can be high quality, but totally and completely different. As for the AKG K340 - they make Frank Sinatra appear in front of me from the dead and sing live, they are that good. But with female vocals the highs are a tad rolled off/muted, and I have the bass-light version.

Same thing for the L3000, W11JPN, HE60, K1000, W10VTG.

Shame really!
But it may be your turn some day.

While for me the K340 (screen-modded/bass light version) presented a remarkably smooth midrange, there still seemed to be something missing, like drinking pulp-free orange juice.

To me, the K501 deliver the fresh-squeezed goodness of female and male vocals--pulp and all! : )
