Trusting my own ears, I bought a 598 3 years ago and loved it all the way. Sadly now, its in **** condition and I gave it to my dad. Along the way I have tried the dt 880 and ms1i too but didn't quite like them. I recently bought a he-4 but apparently there is no amp within my reach that can power it. So ill probably sell it :D

Any recommendations on what I should get? 300-400 sounds about right. As for the amp it would probably be powered by a AT-HA26D or any DAC/amp combo at that price range. ( haven't bought yet.)

Thanks! (especially MalVeauX who always responds like immediately :O)

Can you be more specific with ur 598 condition? Is it broken? can you hear anything or is the sound quality degrading for you? if you wan cans for classical then you should go for beyerdynamics as their headphone tends to have a really wide sound stage. The Dt 880 should serve you well, I suggest you use that money and get a really good Amp/DAC instead of another pair of cans. (Centrance has outstanding DAC) :D

Heya,

Simple answer.... get another HD598.
However if you want an even better HD598, look to the Sony MA900.

Alternatively, since you already tried the DT880, here's some other options to explore:

Sony MA900
Hifiman HE-400
AudioTechnica AD900X
AKG Q701 & K702
Philips Fidelio X1
Sennheiser HD598
Sennheiser HD600
Shure SRH1440 (new/used) & Shure SRH1840 (used only)

Most of these will run on inexpensive amplifier equipment. You can easily get by with a simple Fiio E17 or even an E10 for these.

Very best,

I guess q701 it is, since someone is selling it used right now. According to research, big soundstage, less bass and more mids. Sounds about right coming from a HD 598.

Thanks!

... too bad they aren't excatly the looker....

Not to bad, like I said I gave them to my dad. The earcups tore so its extremely uncomfortable and the cusion has several punctures and is deflated.

if the issue is only with the earcups , just get some new replacement ear pads for your 598

HD600/650 is your friend in this case, if you like 598 they sound nearly the same but 600 has less bass distortion. Don't even touch MA900 owned them myself alongside with 598 and not impressed for classical.

cheers

You might like HE4, so maybe buy an amp for it instead of getting something else. But if you want a different model, I agree with Lumos that you'd probably be happiest with another Sennheiser. Consider HD600 with the thicker HD650 replacement cable.

An excellent amp that's inexpensive and popular for the hard to drive Hifimans is the Emotiva Mini-X A-100. It costs $219, but it's a speaker amp so you will need to get an adapter cable for around $40. Or less if you build your own. The Project Ember is another amp that is popular with the HE-4. It's a regular headphone amp and can be had for around $350.

If you do want to sell the HE-4 though, PM me. I might be interested depending on condition and price!

Get an integrated amp and run the HE-4 directly from the speaker outputs.  You will need an adapter (highflight makes a good one for a reasonable price).

That's how I run the HE-6: straight out of the Linn Intek or Qinpu A-1.0X.

You can probably find a suitable "vintage" amp for less than $100 that would make HifiMAN sing.

Did you try the DT880 Premium/250 ohm or the 600 ohm version?  I found the 600 ohm version generally more up to snuff: more detailed, smoother and less brittle-sounding than the 250.

HD650 would do you well, but they need muscular amping to bring out their true potential.

HD600 would serve you well, too.  Not as demanding as the 650.

I am enjoying classical on the Martin Logan Mikros 90 closed portables ($80).
