With my little experience and with my limited listening with different types of headphones I still have not figured out which type or brand of headphones would be excellent for Ambient. Only thing thing I know for sure it needs alot of space and air therefore specious soundstage must be there

Normally, I would like the D2000 for Ambient for their spacious characteristic. I also enjoy Ambient from my Ultrasone HFI-780. Two completely different sounds, but I think it comes down to what kind of sound you like from a headphone. Though, I think PRO 900 may also be a consideration if you have not tried them. Those guys have some of the closeness of the HFI line, but really have a very surrounding soundstage. Also their resolution can give off an "airy" sound, though not at all like Denon D2000.

Just my take from what I've experienced with Ambient. I think Ambient can be a tough one. There are times I can't be without my HFI-780 for Ambient, and other times I would like a bit more of something. I guess it is really mood dependent. I think some Beyerdynamics may be worth a shot. I think the DT770 aren't quite adequate, and the DT990 would definitely do a better job. I have a feeling some DT880 may be enjoyable for Ambient. They are quite an elusive can for me right now, but sooner or later I will have them!

Denon AH-D2000 or Shure SRH-840 would most certainly do for a relatively cheap entry-point.

Strange because I don`t like ambient with D5000, I always feel that it lacks space/air/stage

I only heard DT990 for couple of minutes but I also think Beyerdynamics would be perfect fit, specially T1

Do you ever recommend any other headphone other than AKG K701/702?

I'm sure they're great headphones but still...

I find the AKG K1000 to be magnificent with ambient music. Spaciousness is one of its main pros.

I concur.

If you're looking for another headphone give the Sony SA5000 a try, very spacious and detailed... not quite as much umph as a recabled/ALO-780 but a heck of a lot more comfortable!

No.

He only posts when he can talk about them.

They're good headphones for sure, but they're nowhere near the best there is out there. HD800s are like 10000x better than K701 in every aspect for example.
