Heh, I have nothing against Purdue. My dad went there. I just preferred IU. That would be funny, though.

If he find the mids and treble to be a bit lacking after a long while of burn-in, then the felt removal mod will be for him! It makes a noticeable difference in sound, I think. He could go further and apply dynamat to the inside cups and add some stuffing in there, but I think that just reduces the bass further.

I have some pretty high end audio equipment (car and home), and the 700s sound plenty "clear" to me afterward. Not perfect...they could be better. But for $35, it's totally worth buying.

Either way, they're a pretty safe buy for a first-timer. $35 isn't TOO much if you don't like them.

Ok. I'll trust you on this. i'll look for the 700...

ok. So describe the felt removal mod/ give me a picture (or anything for that matter)... thanks a lot =D

This details the mod (felt removal and more) for the HA-RX900, but applies for the 700 as well. First burn them in for a while (75+ hours). If you still don't like the sound, try the felt "removal" mod. If you still don't like it, do the dynamat mod. If still not to your taste, try the acoustic stuffing.

In the end, if you still don't like it, you're only out $34-40, and someone will probably buy them off you.

Keep in mind, though, that they are pretty big headphones. Comfy and stay on easily, but big.
